Budapest is the capital of Hungary. It’s a very big and unusual city. The River Danube divides the city into two parts. On the western bank there are the woods and the hills of Buda and the old town. There are many old buildings, cathedrals, museums there. From Buda there are wonderful views of Pest and the river.
On the eastern bank there is a big and modern Pest, the business and shopping centre. There are good theatres, restaurants, bars and shops.
Six bridges join Buda and Pest. For nearly a thousand years Buda and Pest were two towns. Then in 1873 they joined and became one city. Until 1939 Budapest was one of the most important cultural capitals of Europe.
